Strategies for Successful Readers and Writers

Successful readers and writers need to learn and practice a number of strategies to use Before, During, and After Reading.

Pre-Reading Strategies Include:

Activating Background Knowledge
Making predictions and previewing a book
Doing a Picture Walk
Forming purpose for reading and writing

Questioning and making predictions about a story

During-Reading Strategies Include:

Using specific strategies and techniques to figure out words
Prompting a reader who is stuck

Post-Reading Strategies Include:

Story retelling all or part of a story
Discussing favorite parts or elements of a story
Answering questions
Comparing to another book
Writing new ending
Drawing a picture about the story
Playing a game related to the story
